Tim Robbins
Timothy "Tim" Francis Robbins (born October 16, 1958 in West Covina , California ) is an American actor , director , screenwriter , producer , activist and musician . He was awarded the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his acting performance in Mystic River .
Life
Tim Robbins, the son of folk singer Gil Robbins , grew up in Greenwich Village , New York . In 1970, when he was only twelve years old, he joined the drama group Theater for the City . After high school he studied drama at UCLA until 1981 . At that time he started his own theater company, with which he toured all of California.
After numerous minor television appearances, Robbins starred in 1986's Top Gun - You Fear No Death or the Devil , one of the most successful films of the decade. However, he did not make the final breakthrough until 1988 with Annie's men . During the filming he met his future partner Susan Sarandon , with whom he has two sons. The younger of the two is actor Miles Robbins . After 21 years, the two separated in summer 2009.
In the early 1990s he was seen in the films Cadillac Man with Robin Williams , Jungle Fever by Spike Lee and Short Cuts by Robert Altman, among others. Altman also cast him for the title role of his satire The Player , for which Robbins won the Best Actor Award and a Golden Globe at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival . He achieved another great success with the prison drama The Condemned , which is based on a Stephen King novel and was nominated for seven Academy Awards.
In addition to his acting career, Robbins has worked as a director and screenwriter three times: in 1992 he directed Bob Roberts , and in 1995 the acclaimed drama Dead Man Walking - His Last Walk , which earned him an Oscar nomination for directing . Susan Sarandon received the award for Best Actress . 1999 staged Tim Robbins Cradle Will Rock (Cradle Will Rock) . Robbins received an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Clint Eastwood's Mystic River in 2004 .
In October 2008, Robbins was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the film category.
Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon were - along with their mutual friend Sean Penn - two of the harshest critics of the Bush administration . Both are politically very active and took part in several peace demonstrations in the run-up to the Iraq war . Many of Robbins' films (especially his directorial work) contain political statements. Dead Man Walking deals with the death penalty in a complex but unambiguous way , while Arlington Road deals with paranoia and terrorism in a petty bourgeois neighborhood . In the black political satire Bob Roberts , which he also wrote and directed, Robbins portrays the unstoppable political rise of an unscrupulous reactionary rebel.
In 2013 Tim Robbins was appointed to the competition jury at the 63rd Berlinale .
Robbins' regular German speaker since The Player (1992) has been Tobias Meister , who had previously spoken to him in Top Gun (1986) and Cadillac Man (1990). Since then, however, this has not been possible in the three films Mission to Mars (2000), Mystic River (2003) and Kings of Rock - Tenacious D (2006), as Robbins appeared there alongside other actors who are also spoken by Meister in German: Gary Sinise , Sean Penn and Jack Black . In these three cases, Robbins was spoken alternately by Stefan Fredrich , who is best known as the German regular speaker for Jim Carrey .
