occupation

The Model and the Sniffer (original title: Moonlighting ) is an American television series from 1985 to 1989. It ran on German television in the early 1990s.

The wealth of puns and allusions and the quickly spoken dialogues were unusual for a television series of the time and are considered an adaptation of the screwball comedy of the 1930s.

While Cybill Shepherd had already been cast for the female lead when the script was being written, the series marked the beginning of a great career for the still completely unknown Bruce Willis , who was selected from over 1000 actors.

The original English title Moonlighting in German means undeclared work , second job ( preferably after work, so in "times of moonlight" ) or secondary activity, and is used here within a play on words with the name of the detective ( "Blue Moon").

The theme song is sung by Al Jarreau .

main characters

Madelyn "Maddie" Hayes , owner of the detective agency, is a former photo model and is characterized by self-confidence, intelligence and cool eroticism. Behind its strong facade hides a soft, vulnerable core. She feels a love-hate relationship for David Addison: his sayings, his way of life and his views are reason enough for Maddie to repeatedly doubt her decision to work with David.

Detective David Addison is eloquent, often talkative and usually behaves rather infantile . He often acts haphazardly and relies on his luck, his knowledge of human nature and his instinct. Especially in dangerous situations, another side of David's character shows up, who can then act cleverly and profoundly.

The operator Agnes Topisto (in the original version Agnes DiPesto ) is the good soul of the detective agency. Her lengthy rhymes with which she greets callers are a running gag of the series. In some episodes she intervenes directly in the detective investigation.

From the 27th episode is Curtis Armstrong as Herbert Viola on the pitch. From now on, he and Agnes form the Buffo couple in the series, whose relationship reflects the - increasingly complex, neurotic and serious - relationship between Maddie and David.

Detective agency

The "Blue Moon" detective agency was previously run by David Addison under the name "City Angels" until Maddie took it over with David and it was renamed "Blue Moon". There are various employees who live according to the motto “money without work”. The detective agency consists of a large room and two offices with attached bathrooms. At the entrance you will find Agne's workplace as a switchboard operator. On the wall at the end of the room are desks with the other employees. David's office has a desk, minibar, couch, and a small television. Maddie's office has a desk and a couch. Behind a picture on the wall is a hidden safe that holds the paychecks, company securities, cash and David's gun.

Episode list

content

In the pilot episode, the formerly successful photo model Madelyn Hayes realizes that she has been cheated down the line by her asset manager. To her surprise, she is facing bankruptcy, but is the owner of several companies that have been declared depreciable, including the City of Angels detective agency . The head of this unsuccessful detective agency is David Addison. When Maddie wants to close the detective agency on the advice of her attorney, Addison fights against it with hands and feet. He tries to get Maddie to run the detective agency, but she refuses to work with him. That changes when, after dinner in a restaurant, a dying punk puts a mysterious watch on Maddie and the two detectives are unintentionally involved in an exciting hunt for criminals together for the first time. Finally, Maddie becomes the owner of the new Blue Moon detective agency . The name comes from a hair shampoo that Maddie modeled for an advertisement.

65 further episodes of the crime comedy followed, in which the funny dialogues, the erotic tension between the main characters and the somewhat clumsy nature of the detective work are often much more in the foreground than the actual criminal hunt.

particularities

In the series it was repeatedly reflected that it was a television series. Often with short comments, e.g. B. "They (David and Maddie) don't appear in this episode" , from Oh, my 'Mama! ( Los Dos DiPestos ). Or remarks to the audience, " Come on, you know that I will be there " from the unknown lover ( And The Flesh Was Made Word ). In episode 8 of the second season, Bruce Willis makes an allusion to 'Die Hard' in the German dubbing, which cannot be in the original version because the film was only shot 2 years later.

However, there are also episodes in which this is expanded:

For example, in the episode It's Christmas Hard ( T'was the Episode before Christmas ) , David finds that it is the last episode before Christmas. Then it starts to snow in the studio; the whole team sings.

When the writers' strike in Hollywood for 22 weeks in 1988 , the story of the episode The Unknown Beloved ( And the Flesh was Made Word ) ended prematurely. The audience is told that the authors are on strike. The airtime is filled with common singing.

In the last episode, Total Lunar Eclipse ( Lunar Eclipse ) to be protagonists of a station staff informed that this was the last episode and the series would be discontinued.

publication

The series was first broadcast in Germany on March 21, 1990 on the private broadcaster RTL plus .

All five seasons were released in Germany in four DVD boxes, the first two seasons are in one box. The boxes of the last two seasons contain a total of four episodes that were not previously dubbed or broadcast in German.
