life and career

Cybill Shepherd (1970)

At the age of 16 she won the Miss Teenage Memphis competition and began a career as a model . In 1971, she dedicated the film director Peter Bogdanovich for the female lead in his patrol The Last Picture Show (The Last Picture Show) . In 1972, Elaine May's comedy The Heartbreak Kid followed . The success of both films with critics and audiences seemed to indicate the beginning of an equally successful film career for Shepherd, especially since she had been in a relationship with Peter Bogdanovich since the shooting of Last Picture Show and also played the lead role in two of his other films. However, the drama Daisy Miller (1974) and the musical comedy At Long Last Love (1975) starring Burt Reynolds fell through with audiences, and Shepherd's acting in particular received almost without exception devastating reviews.

In 1976, Martin Scorsese hired Shepherd for the comparatively small female lead in his film Taxi Driver . The worldwide success of this film could not save Cybill Shepherd's career, as rumors were spread in professional circles about her problems with dialogues and with her film partner Robert De Niro . In the following years, Cybill Shepherd only appeared in a few, hardly attention-grabbing, cinema films.

She had her comeback from the mid-1980s with the globally successful television series The Model and the Snoopers ( Moonlighting , 1985 to 1989) with Bruce Willis , for which she was twice awarded a Golden Globe Award . Since then she has been regarded as a renowned television actress. From 1995 to 1998 she had great success with her sitcom Cybill , for which she received another Golden Globe . In 2003 and 2005, she played the role of American television personality Martha Stewart in two television films, The Story of Martha Stewart and Martha Behind Bars . From 2007 to 2009 she starred in the US television series The L Word - When Women Love Women, the role of Phyllis Kroll.

Her musical career received little attention: In 1974 Shepherd released her debut album with Cybill Does It ... To Cole Porter with titles by the legendary composer Cole Porter , produced by Peter Bogdanovich. On the seven following albums she mainly interpreted jazz tracks. The last was released in 2004 under the title At Home With Cybill .

Cybill Shepherd has been married twice and has three children. Her daughter Clementine Ford (* 1979) also played her serial daughter in The L Word .
