A Heavenly Lover (Original Title: Chances Are ) is an American fantasy comedy film from 1989 . Directed by Emile Ardolino and written by Perry Howze and Randy Howze .

action

Prosecutor Louie Jeffries died in a car accident in 1964. His wife Corinne still cannot forget him after more than 20 years. Philip Train, who was once friends with the deceased, is interested in her, but she refuses a relationship.

Train introduces Corinne to college graduate Alex Finch. Finch flirts with Corinne and Louie's daughter, Miranda. Suddenly he remembers his previous life as Louie, when he was reincarnated . Thereupon he evades Miranda and woos Corinne.

Reviews

The TV Guide editors wrote that the film was an amusing, lighthearted romantic comedy with some incestuous undertones. It is one of the best body swap films of the late 1980s. The plot is not entirely believable, but the script is thoughtful and the characters are relatively complex.

Film-Dienst wrote that the "frivolous starting point" served as a "hook for a predominantly amusing, light and quiet comedy" that wasenrichedwith "criminalistic influences and critical swipes" - including New Age .

Cinema magazine wrote that the film was "a magical, hilarious fantasy comedy" . The director gives "the old story of the reborn lover a new charm" with "quiet humor, light satire and a lot of romance " .

Awards

The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song in 1990 for the song After All . The same song was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1990 and won the BMI Film & TV Award .
