Josef Sommer (actor)

Maximilian Josef Sommer (born June 26, 1934 in Greifswald , Germany ) is a German-American actor .

Life

Josef Sommer is the son of the art historian couple Clemens Sommer and Elisabeth Müller. The family fled Germany to the USA in 1937 because of racist persecution, where the father found work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill . After graduating from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania in 1957 and serving in the US Army, Sommer initially performed at the American Shakespeare Festival . In 1970 he made his Broadway debut at the August Wilson Theater in the role of Brabantio in Othello .

1971 followed a first supporting role in Don Siegel's film Dirty Harry . Sommer, still active in the theater, played mostly supporting roles in numerous film productions. In addition to theater and film, he also worked in television productions. In 1987 he portrayed US President Gerald Ford in The Betty Ford Story , a biography with Gena Rowlands in the title role . He also made guest roles in television series such as Without a Trace and Law & Order .
