action

An Israeli Douglas A-4 is shot down during the Yom Kippur War ; she was on alert over enemy airspace and carried an atom bomb . This is buried in the crash and only found by chance decades later. An international group of neo-Nazis led by an influential man named Dressler is bringing them under their control and planning to use them in an attack that will lead to war between the United States and Russia .

The young CIA analyst Jack Ryan, who used to be a soldier in the Marines but retired from the military due to a back injury, is investigating missing Russian nuclear scientists. In doing so, he neglects his new girlfriend, the doctor Cathy Muller. With the permission of his mentor, CIA Director William Cabot, Jack reveals to Cathy that he works for the CIA; at first she thinks this is a lame excuse.

Meanwhile, in Russia, President Nemerov comes to power, who is immediately challenged by old communist generals. These carry out an unauthorized artillery attack with chemical weapons ( Novitschok - since summer / autumn 2018 in German translation; Novitschok was not mentioned in the original or in German translation before summer / autumn 2018) on the Chechen capital Grozny . Nemerov, suspected of being a hardliner by the Americans , takes the blame for it. He wants to pretend to have the situation under control. However, Ryan expresses doubts that Nemerov is behind it.

In an investigation that Ryan is carrying out in cooperation with secret service man John Clark in Ukraine , the two discover that the missing scientists in Ukraine have built a new bomb from the material of the Israeli bomb. This has already been smuggled by ship to Baltimore in the USA. Was visiting US President Robert Fowler just the Super Bowl in football stadium , where the bomb was deposited.

Ryan sends a warning, Fowler and the Cabot accompanying him then flee the stadium. When their motorcade is not yet completely out of the danger zone, the atomic bomb detonates. The football stadium and much of downtown Baltimore will be destroyed. Tens of thousands of people die. Cabot is seriously injured by the explosion and dies a little later in a hospital in the presence of Ryan, who has since arrived. He took Cabot's papers and organizers in order to establish contact with an informant in the Kremlin , code name " Spinnaker ", who was secretly working with Cabot, and to prevent a catastrophic confrontation between the two superpowers. Meanwhile, Cathy tries to help the victims of the explosion in her partially destroyed hospital in Baltimore.

A Russian officer bribed by Dressler's men orders the pilots of his squadron of Russian fighter planes to shoot at an American aircraft carrier in the North Sea . He leads them to believe that shortly after the nuclear strike in Baltimore, the Americans sent an ICBM to Moscow and destroyed the city. The Americans see this attack as confirmation that Russia is behind the Baltimore attack; they then bomb the aircraft base.

Nemerov alarms his nuclear forces to protect Russia, Fowler sends B-2 bombers against Russia. A new world war looms. Ryan tries to explain to an adviser to the US President that the two states have been conspiratorial and should be played off against each other; but he doesn't want to listen to him. Ryan uses Cabot's ID to gain access to the Pentagon and makes direct contact with Nemerow over the hot wire . After some concerns and against the advice of his military, the latter withdrew the alert, and Fowler also called back the American bombers.

The USA and Russia then agree a peace treaty and an alliance. The secret services begin to investigate and eliminate the main culprits. Dressler dies from a Russian car bomb while Gruschkow is under surveillance, the arms dealer is cut in the throat by John Clark with a knife, the Russian air force officer is shot by two agents in a forest.

In the final scene, the Russian President gives a speech in front of the White House about the friendship agreements that Ryan is observing with his girlfriend. They are joined by Gruschkow, who surprises Ryan with the knowledge of some internal information, including some private ones. So he presents Cathy Muller with a present for her engagement to Ryan, which both had just closed that morning. Grushkov's remarks make it clear that he is Cabot's Kremlin contact "spinnaker" and the two agree to stay in touch in the future.

Reviews

The film received positive reviews overall, but not as good as the other film adaptations of Tom Clancy's novels , such as the Hunt for Red October . Roger Ebert praised the special effects in the Chicago Sun-Times on May 31, 2002. He also praised the direction and - despite some in his opinion unrealistic passages - the script. Ebert also praised some actors like James Cromwell, Philip Baker Hall, Alan Bates and Bruce McGill.

The lexicon of international films judged: "Routine action film based on a bestseller by Tom Clancy, which occasionally puts a strain on the public's credulity and only wins it over with a few ironic swipes at the nervous actionism of the political rulers."

Differences in the plot of film and book

In the book, the masterminds behind building bombs are not neo-Nazis, but Islamic extremists who, with the help of a former RAF terrorist , a GDR nuclear technician and a descendant of the Indians, had the atom bomb built. The Russian President is called "Narmonov" in the book. President Fowler is safe at Camp David. Ryan has been married to the ophthalmologist and surgeon Cathy Ryan for many years. In the course of the book, both fall victim to political intrigue from the orbit of the White House, which is why Ryan has extreme difficulties after the attack in getting his de-escalating food for thought to be heard. The Super Bowl takes place in Denver, while the sea conflict is developing in the Mediterranean. The clash provoked by the terrorists, on the other hand, takes place between American and Soviet tank units in Berlin.
