James Oliver Cromwell (born January 27, 1940 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American actor and Emmy Award winner.

James Cromwell grew up in Manhattan as the son of well-known director John Cromwell and actress Kay Johnson . He became known to a larger and international audience only in the mid-1990s. Previously, his career was mainly limited to TV and supporting roles. A well-known role in German-speaking countries from this period was the role of assistant Marcel in the comedy A corpse for dessert in 1976 .

His career has picked up since he first played farmer Arthur Hoggett in A Pig Called Babe in 1995 . He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

A year later followed roles in Larry Flynt , LA Confidential and Star Trek: The First Contact , where he played the memorable role of warp drive inventor Zefram Cochrane . Since that time he has worked on numerous well-known film productions.

In 2006 he was seen as Prince Philip on the side of Helen Mirren in the drama The Queen . In 2010 he embodied Pius XII in the German-Italian two-part TV series . the papal title figure, controversial because of her ambivalent attitude towards the Holocaust . In 2012 he had a lead role in the second season of American Horror Story .

With a height of 1.98 m, James Cromwell is one of the physically tallest actors. He is a vegan and an outspoken animal welfare advocate . He was briefly arrested in 2001 in Virginia during an action for the animal rights organization PETA .

In December 2015, the 75-year-old was arrested with five other climate protection activists during a sit-in in front of a gas-fired power plant under construction in New York State. A judge fined the demonstrators $ 375 each for obstructing traffic. Cromwell and two others refused payment and were each sentenced to seven days in prison. If objections are not granted, the penalties must be taken by July 14, 2017. Cromwell and his colleagues started serving the sentence, but were released early the following Monday after just three days.

Cromwell was married to Anne Ulvestad from 1976 to 1986 and to actress Julie Cobb from 1986 to 2006 . In 2014 he married actress Anna Stuart. The first marriage had three children.
