Marshall is an American biography by Reginald Hudlin that was released in US theaters on October 13, 2017. The film drama tells about the African-American lawyer and later judge Thurgood Marshall .

USA in the 1940s: African American attorney Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) works for the NAACP and handles difficult cases across the country. Especially for defendants of his skin color, the young lawyer is often the only hope in a racist environment. Together with his inexperienced Jewish colleague Samuel Friedmans, he is now supposed to represent Joseph Spell, a black chauffeur who is said to have raped the wife of his wealthy, white employer, but who protests his innocence.

Biographical background

Thurgood Marshall was an American Freemason and lawyer who became the first African-American judge on the US Supreme Court. Marshall served from 1967 to 1991 when he retired due to illness. President John F. Kennedy proposed Marshall to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in 1961 . Marshall served on a federal appeals court until 1965 before President Lyndon B. Johnson named him United States Solicitor General . Two years later, Marshall was named by Johnson, with Senate approval, to succeed Tom C. Clark as Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

In 1992 the American Philosophical Society awarded Marshall the Benjamin Franklin Medal for Distinguished Public Service , and on November 30, 1993, Marshall was posthumously awarded the Medal of Freedom , the highest civilian honor in the United States. The Foley Square Courthouse in New York City , where he was temporarily employed, in 2001 in his honor by the US Congress in Thurgood Marshall United States Courthouse renamed.

Stand Up for Something , the first song on the soundtrack, was written by Diane Warren and the American rapper Common , and sung by him with soul and R&B singer Andra Day .

The film was first shown on September 21, 2017 at Howard University in Washington, celebrated its official premiere on October 4, 2017 as part of the San Diego International Film Festival and was released in US cinemas on October 13, 2017, 50 Years after Marshall was appointed Justice to the United States Supreme Court.

So far, the film has won over 80 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .

Wall Street Journal's Joe Morgenstern says the film title simply names a great man Marshall, which suggests that the film is more concerned with him in his earlier years than with the greatness he later attains.

Devan Coggan of Entertainment Weekly says Chadwick Boseman , who previously in film biographies already as James Brown [Note .: to Get on Up ] and Jackie Robinson [Note .: in 42 - The true story of a sports legend ] was to see embodied in the The role of young Thurgood Marshall is a man of healthy self-confidence who stubbornly indulges in truth and justice.
