Stand Up for Something , the first song on the soundtrack for the film Marshall by Reginald Hudlin , was written by Grammy, Emmy and Golden Globe winner Diane Warren and American rapper and Oscar winner Common , and was written by him with the Soul and R&B singer Andra Day sang. In 2015, Common won an Oscar for Glory from the film Selma, along with John Legend .
Andra Day said of Stand Up for Something and the film Marshall : “I was so moved by the story of Thurgood Marshall. It was an incredible honor to not only be asked to record the lead single, but also appear in the movie. I've always dreamed of working with Diane and Common, and the experience was better than I could have ever imagined. This is such an important project. I'm thankful to be a part of it. "For her part, Warren said:" I am so honored to have worked with Andra and Common on this important song. I am more proud of this song than any other I have ever written. "

The soundtrack was released by Warner Bros. Records in September 2017, and the song itself was released as a single on August 23, 2017. A music video for the song was also released in mid-October 2017.
On November 9, 2017, Warren presented the song as part of the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Patron of the Artists Awards. Day and Common sang the song in late November 2017 as part of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade .
