Andra Day (2016)

Andra Day (* the thirtieth December 1984 as Cassandra Monique Batie in Spokane , Washington ) is a soul - and R & B - singer and songwriter .

Life

Born in Spokane and raised in San Diego , Day attended the Valencia Park Elementary School there, where she received her first music lessons. She later sang in a church choir and studied dance and music at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts. In her early twenties she tried her hand at street music in her adopted home Los Angeles and covered well-known tracks from Lionel Richie to Eminem , which landed her several hits in the YouTube charts. She was discovered by Stevie Wonder in 2010 after he received a live recording of one of her stage appearances by his then-wife Kai Millard Morris . Since then, Wonder has been her friend and mentor at the same time. Day also co-produced a commercial with Wonder, which was broadcast on television before Christmas 2015 and seen millions of times on the Internet.

In the summer of 2015, Day went on tour with Lenny Kravitz . Her first studio album, Cheers to the Fall , was released in August . Director Spike Lee , friend of Stevie Wonder, directed her first music video for Forever Mine . M. Night Shyamalan was hired to direct a music video for the song Rise Up , which was released in May 2016 . In June 2016, Day sang the tribute The Greatest of All Time for the recently deceased Muhammad Ali together with John Legend as part of the “Spike's Guys Choice Awards” . In July 2016, Day was invited to the music show Greatest Hits , broadcast by the ABC , where she sang Love Sneakin 'Up on You , written by Bonnie Raitt in 1995 . In the same month, Day was invited to the late-night show Inas Nacht and had an appearance on a German television program for the first time.

In late July 2016, Day had a vocal performance at the Democratic National Convention , the convention of the American Democratic Party . At the beginning of August 2016, Paramount Pictures and MGM released the music video for Days' song The Only Way Out , which also included a trailer for Ben Hur , which was released in US cinemas in August 2016, but which was ultimately not part of the film's soundtrack has been. The song itself, which Day wrote with Dave Wood , was already available for download at the end of July. In September 2016, Day sang the US National Anthem during the 2016 NFL season's inaugural game between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers at the stadium . This appearance was controversially discussed by critics.

For his album New York Rhapsody , which will be released in autumn 2016, the pianist Lang Lang worked with Day, Herbie Hancock , Lindsey Stirling and Madeleine Peyroux , among others . In the film, Marshall of Reginald Hudlin in 2017 Day made a guest appearance as a singer. For the soundtrack for the film, she contributed the song Stand Up for Something together with Common and Diane Warren . In November 2017, Day announced some of the Grammy Awards nominations . Her song was also on the nomination list.

style

Day sings songs that can be located in contemporary R&B and soul . Day appears in a rockabilly look, and her gestures and stage performance are meticulously rehearsed, which reminds critics of Etta James or Ella Fitzgerald . Her interest in rock music was influenced by Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix , but the influence of Michael Jackson is also evident, whom she occasionally covers in live performances. In addition, influences of the jazz singers Billie Holiday and Nina Simone and an interest in hip-hop , especially West Coast rap, can be discovered.

Achievements and Awards

In December 2015, Day received two nominations for the 2016 Grammy Awards , one for Rise Up for Best R&B Performance and one for Cheers to the Fall for Best R&B Album. In 2016, Day was also nominated for Best Newcomer at the NAACP Awards . The song The Only Way Out , which was released at the end of July 2016 and which Day contributed to the soundtrack of the film Ben Hur , landed on the iTunes charts in individual countries . In October 2016, the single Rise Up reached gold status in the USA.

For the song Stand Up for Something written by Diane Warren , which Day sang with rapper Common for the film Marshall , she received the Hollywood Song Award at the 2017 Hollywood Film Awards. At the NAACP Image Awards that same year, Day received nominations in the categories of Best Artist and, together with Common, as Best Duo (both for Stand Up for Something ). At the end of November 2017, this was followed by a nomination in the Best Song Written For Visual Media category at the Grammy Awards and in mid-December 2017 a nomination for the Black Reel Awards as best film song .
