Rise Up is a song of the US R & B - singer Andra Day . The piece was released as a single on August 28, 2015 from their debut album Cheers to the Fall , which was released on the same day.

Content and video

The title of the song, Rise Up , can be translated as rise but also indignant . The song tells of pioneering African American women who have achieved something and inspired others and ends with the words “We'll rise up, and we'll do it a thousand times again, for you.” (“We'll rise up, and we'll do it a thousand times again, for you guys. ")

M. Night Shyamalan was commissioned to direct the music video for the song, which appeared in May 2016 ; it is his first music video.

Since the history of soul in particular is closely linked to the struggle of the US civil rights movement against racial segregation and for equality and the content of the song is African Americans, who serve as role models, it is played again and again at related events.

In November 2015, Andra Day sang the song with Nick Jonas at Shining A Light: A Concert for Progress on Race in Los Angeles . After the massacre in Orlando Day sang the song in June 2016 as part of the television program Austin City Limits in Austin .

The first trailer for the film The Birth of a Nation by director and activist Nate Parker was accompanied by the song Rise Up . The song made the speech of a leader of a slave revolt echo musically in the trailer and underlined the later take up arms. On June 28, 2015, Day presented her song at the BET Awards 2015 .

On February 16, 2016, the song reached number 24, its best placement on the iTunes charts. In December 2015, Rise Up was nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Performance at the 2016 Grammy Awards. The album Cheers to the Fall also received a Grammy nomination for best R&B album. In October 2016, the single reached gold status in the United States.
