Sequence of events

Emergency vehicles and rescue vehicles in front of the night club during the hostage situation

Around 2:00 a.m. local time (8:00 a.m. CEST ), the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida, which is mostly visited by LGBT people, was hostage-taking and shooting using a SIG Sauer MCX self-loading rifle and a Glock 17 . According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives , the perpetrator had legally acquired these weapons the week before. When Mateen entered the Pulse , there were about 320 people in the premises. About 100 police officers were dispatched to the crime scene after the first emergency calls.

At 2:22 a.m., the perpetrator called an emergency call , pledging himself to the terrorist organization Islamic State and also referring to Tamerlan and Jochar Zarnajew , the perpetrators of the attack on the Boston Marathon . At 3:58 a.m., the Orlando Police Department (OPD) announced publicly that there had been a shooting with numerous injuries at the club.

As more and more police officers reached the Pulse , Mateen withdrew to the toilet rooms, where he had four to five hostages under his control. During the subsequent negotiations with the police, according to the police chief, the perpetrator appeared calm and relaxed and indicated that he had explosives with him and that he was killing other hostages. A police SWAT team stormed the club at 5:08 am. Among other things, a hole was blasted in an outer wall. According to the police, around 30 people were freed during this action. The assassin was killed in an exchange of fire with the police. 39 people were found dead inside the club and two more outside. Other victims died from their injuries in nearby hospitals. A policeman was shot in the head while being stormed with an eye injury that required hospital treatment; the bullet had pierced the helmet.

A total of at least 49 people were killed and 53 other people were z. T. seriously injured. The majority of the victims in the club were US citizens of Puerto Rican and Mexican descent .

On June 30, the New York Times reported on newly emerged documents that challenged the course of events published by officials. Emergency callers also reported gunshots after 2:18 a.m., namely at 2:30 a.m. and 2:34 a.m., which contradicts previous statements. The first calls from seriously injured people from the Pulse's toilet rooms reached the emergency services at 2:21 a.m., 30 minutes before the police on site were warned that Mateen was carrying explosives, which raises the question of why the access is not happened earlier. In addition, an earlier report was confirmed that some of the escape doors of the nightclub did not work.

Perpetrator

The assassin Omar Mateen (driver's license photo)

Omar Mir Seddique Mateen, who last lived in Port St. Lucie , was born on November 16, 1986 in New Hyde Park , New York . He was the son of Afghan immigrants and moved to Port St. Lucie with his parents in 1990. His father had become a wealthy financial broker and received American citizenship . Until graduation, Mateen attended three different high schools , where he was repeatedly suspended from school, including for assault. He attended Martin County High School for a year and graduated from Indian River State College in 2006 and 2007, respectively.

In 2009 he married a woman from Uzbekistan ; the couple divorced in 2011. In 2013, Mateen married for the second time. He became the father of a son who was three years old at the time of the crime. Mateen held US and Afghan citizenship.

As a result of his work for the largest international security company G4S, Mateen had two gun licenses with associated weapons and a license as a security guard. Mateen was not on the FBI's terrorist list , but he is being investigated into other crimes.

According to the FBI, there are indications that Mateen sympathized with the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) and a hate crime against homosexuals is not ruled out. However, this originally suspected motive was not confirmed in the course of further investigations: Mateen had neither specifically used an LGBT nightclub as a target, nor had he made any anti-LGBT comments during his series of murders. Instead, he repeatedly criticized current military operations in Muslim countries.

Mateen was 2,013 out of the security office of the Courthouse of Fort Pierce dismissed because he was misbehaving there by occurrence and inflammatory comments, and added as a security guard at a local golf course. According to FBI Director James B. Comey , Mateen was also on a terrorism watch list during this incident from 2013 to 2014. Adam Schiff , Democratic Party's minority leader in the United States House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence , said there was information that Mateen had sworn allegiance to ISIS.

Mateen's father Seddique Mir Mateen told NBC News that his son's act was not religiously motivated, but that his son became very angry after seeing two men kissing in Miami months ago. Seddique Mir Mateen himself faked in 2015 that he was running for the presidential election in Afghanistan that had been held a year earlier . The perpetrator's father also sympathized with the Taliban on an Islamic television station in California and on YouTube . There he also criticized the Durand Line ( demarcation line between Afghanistan and Pakistan ).

According to eyewitnesses, Mateen frequently visited the LGBT club he attacked and consumed alcohol more often at the bar. He received negative attention there due to his aggressiveness. He also used a dating app popular with gays. The FBI said there was no evidence of the use of such dating apps. A spokeswoman for the club owner said Mateen was not a regular guest at Pulse.

His ex-wife Yusufiy and former classmates claimed Mateen was homosexual himself.

A preliminary investigation into aiding and abetting has been initiated against the assassin's widow, Noor Zahi Salman. She accompanied him when buying weapons and ammunition and drove him to the Pulse nightclub on an earlier exploration. She is accused of failing to inform the police.

The autopsy revealed that Mateen was HIV negative and had used steroids for a long time .

Reactions

US President Obama addressing the attack on June 12, 2016
Sympathy in front of the US Embassy in Warsaw

A few hours after the crime called the mayor of Orlando, Buddy Dyer , the state of emergency in the city and asked the Governor of Florida, Rick Scott to do this for the entire state. The purpose of the exemption was to facilitate the investigation.

President Barack Obama directed federal agencies to provide whatever assistance they can to intensify the investigation and assist those affected. He described the act as an "act of terror and hatred", synonymous with an assassination attempt "against all Americans". In his statement, Obama also made a connection with the ready availability of weapons in the US:

"Today marks the most deadly shooting in American history. The shooter was apparently armed with a handgun and a powerful assault rifle. This massacre is therefore a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people in a school, or in a house of worship, or a movie theater, or in a nightclub. And we have to decide if that's the kind of country we want to be. And to actively do nothing is a decision as well. "

“Today's massacre is the worst in American history. The shooter was apparently armed with a handgun and an automatic rifle. The massacre is a renewed reminder of how easy it is to get into possession of weapons and use them to shoot people in a school, church, cinema or nightclub. We have to choose if we want to be that kind of country. Actively doing nothing is also a decision. "

In addition, Obama ordered the US flags to be raised to half-mast . In response to the attack, Donald Trump , Republican candidate-designate in the 2016 presidential election , once again called for Muslim migrants to be banned from immigration. He also expressed his belief that this attack was just the beginning. The prospective candidate of the Democrats , Hillary Clinton , held in their opinion largely on the wording of the incumbent president.

Representatives from many countries around the world expressed their condolences . In Paris the Eiffel Tower , in Tel Aviv the City Hall, in Sydney the Harbor Bridge , in New York City the One World Trade Center , in Bogotá the Torre Colpatria and in Berlin the Berlin TV Tower and the Brandenburg Gate were illuminated in rainbow colors. In retrospect, the lighting at the Torre Colpatria was switched off again when several thousand people opposed the lighting.

The United States' Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations , David Pressman, urged other members on June 13 to show unity and protect the human dignity of all, regardless of sexual orientation. The following day, the UN Security Council unanimously passed a statement condemning the attack and stating that the victims had been deliberately selected for their lack of heteronormativity . The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights , Seid al-Hussein , called for stricter weapons legislation in the United States .

In 2017, the US publisher DC Comics, in collaboration with IDW Publishing, brought out the comic book Love is love , in which a number of comic artists were involved. In October 2017 the volume was published in German by Panini Comics . For each volume sold, € 3 goes to the Lesbian and Gay Association in Germany .
