Fort Pierce is a city and also the county seat of St. Lucie County in the US state of Florida with 41,590 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Fort Pierce is on the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River , which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway . The city is about 100 km north of West Palm Beach .
The city is the second largest city in Port St. Lucie, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area , after Port St. Lucie .
history
Around 1892, the main line of the Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) reached the site, which was officially declared a city in 1901. In 1947, a branch of the FEC from Fort Pierce to Lake Harbor was opened on the shores of Lake Okeechobe .
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the 41,590 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 21,357 households. The population density was 1088.7 inh / km². 45.3% of the population identified themselves as whites, 40.9% as African American , 0.6% as Indians and 0.9% as Asian Americans . 9.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.7% to several ethnic groups. 21.6% of the population was Hispanic or Latino .
In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 29.5% of all households lived in 33.7% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 61.0% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.59 people and the average family size was 2.23 people.
29.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 24.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 20.3% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 36 years. 49.3% of the population were male and 50.7% were female.
The median annual income was $ 30,869, with 30.2% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the first language of 76.25% of the population, 14.83% spoke Spanish and 8.92% had another mother tongue.

Fort Pierce is crossed or tangent to Interstate 95 , US Highway 1 ( SR 5 ) and Florida State Roads A1A , 68 , 70 , 91 ( Florida's Turnpike , toll) and 615 . The Florida East Coast Railway also runs through the city. St. Lucie County International Airport borders the city to the north .

The crime rate in 2010 was 616 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were nine murders, 27 rapes, 142 robberies, 304 assaults, 689 break-ins, 1615 thefts, 92 car thefts and 15 arson attacks.
