Willie James Redden (born November 11,  1960 in Fort Pierce ) is a retired American - French basketball player .

career

The 2.10 meter indoor player belonged to the basketball team of the University of South Florida from 1978 to 1982 and averaged 10.3 points as well as 6.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocked throws per encounter. The San Antonio Spurs secured the rights to Redden in the 1982 NBA draft process (third selection round, 64th place), but Redden never came to a use in the league.

In the 1982/83 season he played briefly with Lancaster Lightning in the US league Continental Basketball Association (CBA), he played five games and posted 8.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per encounter. Redden continued his career in France, later taking citizenship of the country. From 1983 to 1992 he was under contract with ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne . In October 1987 he set a new record in the Ligue Nationale de Basket with 14 basket  hits in 14 attempts in one game . He was with the team in 1985 and 1986 French runner-up. At ASVEL, Redden scored high points (record: 21.1 points / game in the 1988/89 season), which changed when he moved to CSP Limoges in  1992. There coach Božidar Maljković especially needed his skills in defense, his point yield dropped significantly. This new role and the hard training under Maljković would have been a shock and a big change for him, said Redden. In 1993 he won the European Cup with Limoges . In the semi-final against Real Madrid , he was given the task of covering for Arvydas Sabonis from Lithuania . In the final against Benetton Treviso , Redden scored six points and six rebounds in 26 minutes. Redden was also French champion with Limoges in 1993, the title win was repeated in 1994.

After two years in Limoges, Redden moved to Olympique d'Antibes in 1994 and won the French championship in his first year with the team under the direction of coach Jacques Monclar . He stayed in Antibes until 1997, played again for Limoges at the end of his career in the 1997/98 season and was runner-up with the CSP.

After the end of his playing days, Redden first lived in France and then moved back to the United States, where he worked in the sports department of Vero Beach (state of Florida ).
