Vero Beach is a city and also the county seat of Indian River County in the US state of Florida with 15,220 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Vero Beach is on the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River , which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway . Port St. Lucie is approximately 40 km south and Orlando is 160 km northwest of the city. After Sebastian, Vero Beach is the second largest city in the county or the metropolitan region of Sebastian – Vero Beach.

history

In 1915 a human skull, the so-called Vero man, was found, the age of which was estimated to be around 13,000 years.

The city is located on the Treasure Coast , a stretch of coast that got its name after the sinking of a Spanish silver fleet in a hurricane in 1715 .

1893 took Florida East Coast Railway from Henry Flagler their operation in the region.

The city of Vero, later renamed Vero Beach, was founded in 1919.

In 1961, the aircraft manufacturer Piper Aircraft moved its headquarters to Vero.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 15,220 inhabitants were distributed over 10,258 households. The population density was 530.3 inh / km². 87.5% of the population identified themselves as whites , 4.8% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 1.8% as Asian Americans . 3.8% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.8% to several ethnic groups. 10.7% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 42.4% of all households lived in 18.6% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 52.6% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.01 people and the average family size was 2.65 people.

17.5% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 19.2% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 35.9% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 51 years. 48.7% of the population were male and 51.3% were female.

The median annual income was $ 40,950, with 16.5% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 92.25% of the population, 5.17% spoke Spanish and 2.58% had another mother tongue.

Vero Beach is crossed by US Highway 1 ( SR 5 ) and Florida State Roads A1A and 60 . The Florida East Coast Railway also runs through the city. One mile northwest of Vero Beach is the Vero Beach Regional Airport , the seat of the aircraft manufacturer Piper Aircraft .

The crime rate in 2010 was 247 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were four rapes, 22 robberies, 46 assaults, 179 break-ins, 425 thefts, 24 car thefts and one arson.
