Sebastian is a city in Indian River County in the US state of Florida with 24,772 inhabitants (as of 2016).

geography

Sebastian is located on the Indian River , which forms part of the Intracoastal Waterway , close to the coast of the Atlantic . The city is about 140 km southeast of Orlando . It is the largest in the county or the metropolitan region of Sebastian-Vero Beach.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 21,929 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 10,815 households. The population density was 670.6 inh / km². 90.5% of the population identified themselves as whites, 5.3% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 1.1% as Asian Americans . 1.2% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.6% to several ethnic groups. 7.0% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 42.5% of all households lived in 24.3% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 68.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.30 people and the average family size was 2.75 people.

20.5% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 16.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 34.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 50 years. 47.6% of the population were male and 52.4% were female.

The median annual income was $ 44,235, with 8.7% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 93.57% of the population, 3.00% spoke Spanish and 3.43% had another mother tongue.

The urban area is crossed by US Highway 1 ( SR 5 ) and the Florida East Coast Railway freight line . Nearby leading Interstate 95 over. The nearest airport is Melbourne International Airport (around 35 km north).

The crime rate in 2010 was 210 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were six rapes, eight robberies, 36 assaults, 163 break-ins, 378 thefts, and twelve car thefts.
