The St. Lucie County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Fort Pierce .
history
St. Lucie County was formed on May 24, 1844 from parts of Brevard County. It was named after Lucia of Syracuse , a saint of the Roman Catholic Church who was executed in Sicily in 304 for her Christian faith.

The county has an area of 1782 square kilometers, of which 299 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Martin County , Okeechobee County, and Indian River County .
St. Lucie County is part of the Port St. Lucie, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area , commonly known as the Treasure Coast .
Attractions
- AE "Bean" Backus Gallery. This gallery on the Indian River Lagoon was named after a famous Florida landscape artist. The gallery has approximately 900 m² of exhibition space
- FPL's Energy Encounter. A museum that shows how energy drives the world. Everything can be touched and tried out in the exhibition
- Fort Pierce Main Street. The historic city center is a successful mix between young and old.
- IRCC planetarium. A planetarium where you can explore the sky and the universe.
- St. Lucie County Sports Complex. A huge area of approx. 40 km². This is the stadium where the New York Mets conduct their spring training.
- Fort Pierce Jai Alai . Probably the fastest ball game in the world.
- The Shell Bazar. A market where you can buy all kinds of souvenirs. In operation for 46 years.
- Veteran's Memorial Park. Built in 1995. With its military flags and information stands, it impressively reproduces the military history of the area.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census , St. Lucie County had 277,789 people in 136,690 households. The population density was 187.3 people per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 71.8% white, 19.1% African American , 0.4% Indian and 1.6% Asian Americans . 4.6% were members of other races and 2.6% of different races. 16.6% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 30.5% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 35.7% of all households. 69.1% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.53 people and the average family size was 2.99 people.
24.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 22.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 26.3% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 42 years. 48.9% of the population were male and 51.1% were female.
The median income for a household in the 43,923 USD , while 16.6% of the population lived below the poverty line.
In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 80.05% of the population, 13.12% spoke Spanish and 6.83% had another mother tongue.
