The war flag is the version of a national flag used by the armed forces . A distinction is made between the military flag , which is used by the land forces or by the entire military , and the naval war flag , the flag of the navy .

The war flag is used by the armed forces as a symbol of the state. It should not be confused with standard symbols that symbolize the armed forces or branches of the armed forces as an organization. Their use does not replace the national flag.
