The Sumter County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Bushnell .
history
Sumter County was formed on January 8, 1853 from parts of Marion County. It was named after General Thomas Sumter , a hero of the American Revolutionary War.
geography
The county has an area of 1,503 square kilometers, of which 90 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Lake County , Polk County , Pasco County , Hernando County , Citrus County, and Marion County .

As of the 2010 census , Sumter County had 93,420 people in 53,387 households. The population density was 66.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 86.6% white, 9.7% African American , 0.4% American Indian and 0.7% Asian Americans . 1.5% were members of other races and 1.1% of different races. 6.0% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 63.6% of all households lived in 10.8% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 70.4% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.04 people and the average family size was 2.37 people.
10.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 13.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 19.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 56.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 63 years. 52.0% of the population were male and 48.0% were female.
The median income for a household in the 46,981 USD , while 11.7% of the population lived below the poverty line.
In 2010, English was the first language of 91.25% of the population, 5.82% spoke Spanish and 2.93% had another mother tongue.
