The Suwannee County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Live Oak . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

history

Suwannee County was formed on December 21, 1858 from parts of Columbia County. It was named either after the Spaniard San Juan or after the Indian word of the Cherokee sawani (echo river).

The county has an area of ​​1792 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Hamilton County , Columbia County , Gilchrist County , Dixie County , Lafayette County, and Madison County .

As of the 2010 census , there were 41,551 people in 19,025 households in Suwannee County. The population density was 23.3 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 82.5% white, 11.4% African American , 0.5% Indian and 0.5% Asian Americans . 3.1% were members of other races and 1.9% of different races. 8.7% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 31.0% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 35.1% of all households. 69.2% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.25 people and the average family size was 2.97 people.

25.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 22.3% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 25.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 42 years. 50.4% of the population were male and 49.6% were female.

The median income for a household in the 36,159 USD , while 21.9% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 93.23% of the population, 5.81% spoke Spanish and 0.96% had another mother tongue.
