The Clay County is a county in the US state of Florida . The county seat is Green Cove Springs .

history

Clay County was formed on December 31, 1858 from parts of Duval County. It was named in honor of Henry Clay , a US Senator from Kentucky who was also Secretary of State in the 19th century.

geography

The county is located in northern Florida, around 40 km from Georgia in the north, around 30 km from the Atlantic Ocean in the east , and has an area of ​​1,667 square kilometers, 110 square kilometers of which are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Duval County , St. Johns County , Putnam County , Alachua County , Bradford County, and Baker County . Together with the counties Baker, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns, the county forms the metropolitan area Jacksonville .

According to the 2010 census , Clay County had 190,865 people in 75,478 households. The population density was 122.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 81.8% white, 9.9% African American , 0.5% Native American and 2.9% Asian Americans . 2.0% were members of other races and 2.9% of different races. 7.7% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 23.2% of all households lived in 39.6% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 76.2% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.76 people and the average family size was 3.13 people.

29.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 17.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 49.0% of the population were male and 51.0% were female.

The median income for a household in the 59,649 USD , while 10.1% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the first language of 90.68% of the population, 4.99% spoke Spanish and 4.33% had another mother tongue.
