The Calhoun County is a county in the US state of Florida . The county seat is Blountstown .
history
Calhoun County was formed on January 26, 1838 from parts of Franklin County. It was named after John C. Calhoun , a US Senator from South Carolina .
geography
The county is located in northwest Florida, about 40 km to the northeast from Georgia , about 50 km to the north from Alabama and about 30 km to the southwest from the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 1,488 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Gadsden County , Liberty County , Gulf County , Bay County, and Jackson County .

As of the 2010 census , Calhoun County had 14,625 people in 5,999 households. The population density was 9.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 80.8% white, 13.8% African American , 1.1% Native American and 0.5% Asian Americans . 1.5% were members of other races and 2.4% of different races. 5.2% of the population was Hispanic or Latino .
In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 31.2% of all households lived in 33.5% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 68.2% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.03.
23.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 26.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 21.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 40 years. 54.4% of the population were male and 45.6% were female.

In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 93.60% of the population, 4.28% spoke Spanish and 2.12% had another mother tongue.
