Blountstown is a city and also the county seat of Calhoun County in the US state of Florida with 2514 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Blountstown is around 70 km west of Tallahassee .

history

In 1880 Blountstown was raised to the county seat of Calhoun County and a first courthouse was built. A second building used as a courthouse from 1903 to 1973 is now listed in the NRHP .

The railway age in Blountstown began in 1909 with the opening of a railway line through the Marianna & Blountstown Railroad to Marianna , where there was a connection to the Pensacola - Chattahoochee line then operated by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad . Passenger traffic was operated on the line until 1929 and freight traffic until 1972, before the line was closed.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 2514 inhabitants were distributed over 1045 households. The population density was 302.9 inh / km². 67.6% of the population identified themselves as whites, 27.9% as African American , 0.9% as Indians and 0.5% as Asian Americans . 1.1% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.1% to several ethnic groups. 2.8% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 37.1% of all households lived in 34.1% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 63.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.39 people and the average family size was 3.03 people.

26.1% of the population were younger than 20 years, 20.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 22.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 30.1% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 43 years. 44.8% of the population were male and 55.2% were female.

The median annual income was $ 31,892, with 24.6% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 98.01% of the population, 1.32% spoke Spanish and 0.66% spoke German .
