Marianna is a city and also the county seat of Jackson County in the US state of Florida with 6102 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Marianna is about 100 km northwest of Tallahassee . The city is affected in the east by the Chipola River , a right tributary of the Apalachicola River .
history
The railroad age in Marianna began in 1883 with the opening of the Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad . They created a continuous rail link between Pensacola and Jacksonville . In 1909 the Marianna & Blountstown Railroad opened a branch to Blountstown , but this was closed again in 1972.
The city is particularly known for the Florida School for Boys , which opened in 1900 , a former home for difficult-to-educate youngsters, where inmates were severely mistreated (often resulting in death). In 2011 the institution was closed.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 6,102 inhabitants were distributed over 3,448 households. The population density was 293.4 inh / km². 53.3% of the population identified themselves as whites, 42.0% as African American , 0.4% as Native American and 0.9% as Asian Americans . 0.9% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.5% to several ethnic groups. 2.7% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 29.3% of all households lived in 31.1% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 56.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.22 people and the average family size was 2.95 people.
28.9% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.6% were 20 to 39 years old, 22.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 22.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 36 years. 47.2% of the population were male and 52.8% were female.
The median annual income was $ 25,187, with 25.9% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the first language of 98.25% of the population and 1.75% spoke Spanish .

Marianna is crossed by Interstate 10 , US Highway 90 and Florida State Roads 73 , 166 and 276 . The rail freight traffic through the city is carried out by CSX . The Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport is located about 90 km southwest of the city.

The crime rate in 2010 was 646 points (US average: 266 points) in the high range. There were two murders, twelve rapes, 14 robberies, 50 assaults, 57 break-ins, 215 thefts, 16 car thefts and one arson.
