The county has an area of ​​2,472 square kilometers, of which 101 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Gadsden County , Calhoun County , Bay County , Washington County, and Holmes County .

history

Jackson County was formed on August 12, 1822 from parts of Escambia County. It was named after Andrew Jackson , general in the War of 1812, first territorial governor of Florida and 7th President of the United States from 1829 to 1837. On September 27, 1864, the Battle of Marianna took place here as part of the Civil War .

According to the 2010 census , Jackson County had 49,746 people in 20,980 households. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 69.1% white, 26.6% African American , 0.7% Native American and 0.5% Asian Americans . 1.3% were members of other races and 1.9% of different races. 4.3% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 31.6% of all households lived in 30.6% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 66.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.40 people and the average family size was 2.92 people.

22.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 26.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 21.8% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 41 years. 54.8% of the population were male and 45.2% were female.

The median income for a household in the 38,917 USD , while 15.5% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 95.09% of the population, 3.38% spoke Spanish and 1.53% had another mother tongue.
