The Highlands County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Sebring .

geography

The county has an area of ​​2,865 square kilometers, of which 202 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Okeechobee County , Glades County , Charlotte County , DeSoto County , Hardee County, and Polk Counties . Lake Istokpoga is in the area .

history

The Highlands County was formed on April 23, 1921 from parts of DeSoto County and named after the slightly elevated location. This county is still a popular tourist area today.

According to the 2010 census , there were 98,786 people in 55,363 households in Highlands County. The population density was 37.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 81.0% white, 9.4% African American , 0.5% Native American and 1.5% Asian Americans . 5.5% were members of other races and 2.2% of different races. 17.4% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 22.0% of all households and people aged 65 and over in 50.1% of all households. 65.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.28 people and the average family size was 2.74 people.

20.2% of the population were younger than 20 years, 17.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 22.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 39.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 52 years. 48.9% of the population were male and 51.1% were female.

The median income for a household in the 35.350 USD , while 19.0% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 82.09% of the population, 14.55% spoke Spanish and 3.36% had another mother tongue.
