The Miami-Dade County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is the City of Miami . Together with parts of Broward County and Palm Beach County , eastern Miami-Dade County forms the Miami metropolitan area .

geography

The county covers an area of ​​6,297 square kilometers, of which 1,257 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Monroe County , Collier County, and Broward Counties .

history

Dade County was formed in 1836. It was originally named after Major Francis L. Dade , who was killed in the Second Seminole War in 1835 . On November 13, 1997, the name was changed to Miami-Dade County after a referendum.

According to the 2010 census, the then 2,496,435 inhabitants were distributed over 989,435 households. The population density was 396.4 inh / km². 73.8% of the population identified as white, 18.9% as African American , 0.2% as Native American, and 1.5% as Asian Americans . 3.2% said they were members of other ethnic groups and 2.4% of various ethnic groups. 65.0% of the population also claimed to be Hispanic or Latino .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 29.6% of all households lived in 36.1% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 69.5% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.83 people and the average family size was 3.33 people.

24.7% of the population were younger than 20 years, 28.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 28.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 38 years. 48.4% of the population were male and 51.6% were female.

The median annual income was $ 43,957, with 17.9% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 32.09% of the population, 59.25% spoke Spanish and 8.66% had another mother tongue.
