Islandia is a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean at the transition to Biscayne Bay off the coast of the US state Florida in Miami-Dade County .

history

Former City Islandia

In 1950 there were plans to develop Islandia by extending the Overseas Highway from North Key Largo to Key Biscayne . However, since the county government could not acquire the building rights on Key Biscayne, the plans were dropped. However, Islandia was registered as a city in 1960 when 13 of the 18 islanders voted for it by referendum. Then, this time by the residents, new development plans were announced. Hotel complexes, golf courses and other apartments were to be built on Islandia. A bulldozer has even been procured to level the site on the main island of Elliott Key, but the federal government's acquisition of the main island finally prevented the construction project. In 1980 the area was protected by the establishment of the Biscayne National Park . On March 16, 2012, the archipelago was downgraded from the status of a city to a community-free area .
