The Monroe County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Key West .
geography
The county covers an area of 9,679 square kilometers, of which 7,097 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Collier County and Miami-Dade Counties .
The county includes the western part of the Florida Peninsula and the island chain of the Florida Keys . Although the islands are a very small fraction of the county's area, they are home to more than 99.9% of the population. Only 9 people live in the mainland part to the west of Miami-Dade County, which is largely within the Everglades National Park .
history
Monroe County was formed on July 3, 1823. It was named after James Monroe , the 5th President of the USA. His tenure was from 1817 to 1825.

According to the 2010 census, the then 73,090 inhabitants were distributed over 52,764 households. The population density was 28.3 inh / km². 89.5% of the population were white, 5.7% African American , 0.4% American Indian, and 1.1% Asian Americans . 1.5% were members of other races and 1.8% of different races. 20.6% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 20.5% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 28.2% of all households. 55.8% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.18 people and the average family size was 2.70 people.
16.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 34.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 25.6% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 46 years. 53.3% of the population were male and 46.7% were female.
The median annual income was $ 53,889, with 11.6% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2010, English was the first language of 77.57% of the population, 17.56% spoke Spanish and 4.87% had another mother tongue.
