The Monroe County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Key West .

geography

The county covers an area of ​​9,679 square kilometers, of which 7,097 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Collier County and Miami-Dade Counties .

The county includes the western part of the Florida Peninsula and the island chain of the Florida Keys . Although the islands are a very small fraction of the county's area, they are home to more than 99.9% of the population. Only 9 people live in the mainland part to the west of Miami-Dade County, which is largely within the Everglades National Park .

history

Monroe County was formed on July 3, 1823. It was named after James Monroe , the 5th President of the USA. His tenure was from 1817 to 1825.
