The Lee County is a county in the southwest of the State of Florida to the United States . The county seat is Fort Myers .

The county has an area of 3,139 square kilometers, of which 1,057 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Hendry County , Collier County, and Charlotte County .
The county is run by the Office of Management and Budget for statistical purposes under the name Cape Coral-Fort Myers Metropolitan Statistical Area .
history
Lee County was formed on May 13, 1887 and named after Robert E. Lee , a general in the American Civil War. In August 2004 Fort Myers and the islands of Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel Island and Captiva Island in the north-west were badly affected by the "Cyclone Charley".

According to the 2010 census, the then 618,754 inhabitants were distributed among 371,099 households. The population density was 299.8 inh / km². 83.0% of the population were white, 8.3% African American , 0.4% Native American , and 1.4% Asian Americans . 5.0% were members of other races and 2.1% of different races. 18.3% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 38.4% of all households lived in 25.2% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 65.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.35 people and the average family size was 2.81 people.
21.9% of the population were younger than 20 years, 25.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.7% were 40 to 59 years old, and 31.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 46 years. 49.1% of the population were male and 50.9% were female.
The median annual income was $ 49,444, with 13.5% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 78.99% of the population, 15.19% spoke Spanish and 5.82% had another mother tongue.
