Iona is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lee County in the US state of Florida with 15,369 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Iona is located on the southern bank of the Caloosahatchee River , just before it flows into the Gulf of Mexico . The CDP is crossed by Florida State Roads 865 and 867 . It borders immediately south of Cape Coral and is about 9 km southwest of Fort Myers . Tampa is 130 miles away and Miami is 150 miles away.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 15,369 inhabitants were distributed over 13,224 households. The population density was 830.8 inh / km². 94.9% of the population identified themselves as whites, 1.1% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 1.0% as Asian Americans . 1.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.2% to several ethnic groups. 5.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 and 58.5% of all households lived in 9.2% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 57.6% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 1.86 people and the average family size was 2.31 people.

9.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 11.4% were 20 to 39 years old, 23.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 56.4% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 63 years. 48.4% of the population were male and 51.6% were female.

The median annual income was $ 49,615, with 6.6% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 93.88% of the population, 3.48% spoke Spanish and 2.64% had another mother tongue.
