Lehigh Acres is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lee County in the US state of Florida with 86,784 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Fort Myers is immediately adjacent to Lehigh Acres to the west. The CDP is crossed by Florida State Road 82 . Tampa and Miami are each approximately 200 km away.

history

1954 saw the first settlements of the later Lehigh Acres in the area of the Lucky Lee Ranch. At first it was predominantly retirees who settled here, later many families with middle incomes were added because of the job opportunities in Fort Myers and the surrounding area. Many Germans have also bought a second place of residence here in the last twenty years. Until recently, the settlement area was one of the fastest growing communities in Florida. Due to the financial crisis and the weak dollar, house prices fell up to 50% of their original value. Since 2008 there has been a trend towards forced homework and thus considerable vacancies, which in some cases has already led to vandalism and neglect. The residents are now starting to organize themselves in citizen groups in order to counter the further deterioration of their place of residence.

In order to get out of the low house price misery, the local Chamber of Commerce will apply for city rights for Lehigh Acres in order to obtain greater planning independence in the expected new upswing.
