Sanibel is a city in Lee County in the US state of Florida with 6469 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

The city is located on Sanibel Island on the Gulf of Mexico and can only be reached from the mainland via the toll road Sanibel Causeway , which runs over two artificial islands. According to the city ordinance, no house can be taller than the tallest palm tree.

The island is famous for its beautiful beaches, which are home to the largest populations of mussels in the USA, especially at Bowman's Beach Park, and for a variety of native bird species (e.g. snow ibis, rose spoonbill, darter, cattle egrets, pelicans, divers, Osprey). There are also alligators, raccoons and manatees ( manatees to see).

The island is also known for being home to many former CIA employees. One of the city's best known residents and former mayor is CIA Director Porter Johnston Goss , who resigned on May 5, 2006 .

history

The island was first settled in 1884 and the city of Sanibel was founded in 1974. In 1981, the then German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and his wife Loki visited the island during a private holiday. In 2004, Sanibel was hit by Hurricane Charley , causing the worst storm damage in 44 years. Back then, in 1960, Hurricane Donna hit the island directly.

Religions

In Sanibel there are currently three different churches from three different denominations. There is also a church that does not belong to any denomination (status: 2004).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 6,469 inhabitants were spread over 7,821 households, most of which are holiday homes used as second homes. The population density was 145 inh. / Km². 98.0% of the population identified themselves as whites , 0.6% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 0.4% as Asian Americans . 0.3% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 0.6% to several ethnic groups. 2.3% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 62.3% of all households lived in 9.1% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 67.7% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 1.92 and the average family size was 2.28.

8.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 5.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 21.8% were 40 to 59 years old, and 64.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 65 years. 47.3% of the population were male and 52.7% were female.

The median annual income was $ 88,906, with 5.5% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 96.42% of the population, 2.36% spoke Spanish and 1.22% had another mother tongue.

Attractions

The Sanibel Colored School and the Sanibel Lighthouse and Keeper's Quarters are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 83 points (US average: 266 points) in the low range. There was one robbery, two assaults, 18 break-ins, 89 thefts, one car theft and one arson.
