The Tampa Bay Area is a metropolitan area on Tampa Bay , a bay on the west coast of the US state of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico . It includes Hernando , Hillsborough , Pasco, and Pinellas Counties . The biggest cities are Tampa , Saint Petersburg and Clearwater .

The area is densely populated, many companies have offices here, and there are several amusement parks. The MacDill Air Force Base , headquarters of the US Central Command, is also located in Tampa .

Several rivers flow into the sea in the area, which makes them particularly vulnerable to flooding. A study by the World Bank in 2013 classified coastal cities according to how threatened they are with flooding. Tampa came 7th in terms of estimated total damage - worldwide.

Around 393,000 people live in the city of Tampa and a further 265,000 people in Saint Petersburg (as of 2018). That makes these two cities the third and fourth largest in the Sunshine State after Jacksonville and Miami .

The area is known as the Metropolitan Statistical Area under the name Tampa – St. Petersburg – Clearwater and has a population of around 3.2 million (estimate for 2019, at the 2010 census it was 2,783,243 inhabitants).
