The Hernando County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Brooksville .
geography
The county has an area of 1526 square kilometers, of which 287 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Citrus County , Sumter County , Pasco County . Together with the Counties Hillsborough , Pasco and Pinellas , the county forms the metropolitan area of Tampa Bay Area .
history
Fort DeSoto was built around 1840 in the northeast of what is now Hernando County. Fort Desoto became a small base and stopover on the way to Tampa . The then much larger Hernando County was formed on February 27, 1843 from parts of Alachua County, named after Hernando de Soto . From March 6, 1844 to December 24, 1850, it was renamed "Benton County". In 1854 the small port town of Bayport became the seat of administration. In 1856 the city was renamed Brooksville . In 1855, the town's founder, Joseph Hale , donated a piece of land for a district courthouse in what is now Brooksville. On January 2, 1887, the government of Florida divided Hernando County into three independent counties: Pasco County in the south, Citrus County in the north, and Hernando County in the middle. Since then, the borders of Hernando County have remained unchanged.

As of the 2010 census , Hernando Counties had 172,778 people in 84,377 households. The population density was 139.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 89.5% white, 5.1% African American , 0.4% American Indian and 1.1% Asian Americans . 1.9% were members of other races and 2.0% of different races. 10.3% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 25.8% of all households and persons aged at least 65 years in 43.0% of all households. 68.7% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.38 people and the average family size was 2.82 people.
21.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 18.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.3% were 40 to 59 years old, and 33.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 48 years. 47.8% of the population were male and 52.2% were female.
The median income for a household in the 41,098 USD , while 14.8% of the population lived below the poverty line.
In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 89.01% of the population, 6.97% spoke Spanish and 4.02% had another mother tongue.
