Brooksville is a city and also the county seat of Hernando County in the US state of Florida with 7719 inhabitants (as of 2010).

Brooksville is approximately 60 km north of Tampa .
history
Brooksville was founded in 1856. In 1906 the Tampa Northern Railroad opened a railway line from Tampa to Brooksville, which was bought by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in 1912 .
On February 3, 1966, four people were killed and 45 school children seriously injured in a serious road accident in Brooksville when a school bus was rammed by a truck.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 7,719 inhabitants were distributed over 3,959 households. The population density was 603 inhabitants / km². 76.9% of the population identified themselves as white, 18.0% as African-American , 0.4% as Native American and 0.9% as Asian Americans . 1.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.1% to several ethnic groups. 6.6% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 39.7% of all households lived in 24.1% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 55.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.10 people and the average family size was 2.76 people.
22.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 19.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 23.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 34.1% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 48 years. 44.8% of the population were male and 55.2% were female.
The median annual income was $ 27,228, with 29.4% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 95.98% of the population, 3.57% spoke Spanish and 0.46% spoke German .

Brooksville is a major transportation hub. This is where US Highway 41 meets US Highway 98 and Florida State Roads 50 and 50A . The nearest airport is Tampa International Airport (around 70 km south).

The crime rate in 2010 was 347 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There were three rapes, eleven robberies, 55 assaults, 61 break-ins, 243 thefts and 13 car thefts.
