history

Inland Florida was not settled by settlers until the 1740s after the end of the Second Seminole War. In the absence of road and rail links, coastal and inland waterways were of the utmost importance to supply the settlers. The town of Bayport at the mouth of the Weekiwachee thus became a center for cotton and food trade in the 1850s. During the civil war, the northern states blocked important ports on the Atlantic and Gulf coast with their navy in order to cut off supplies. Small rivers like the Weekiwachee became important waterways. Between 1862 and 1865 a total of 11 blockade breakers were brought in. Bayport became the largest export port for agricultural goods and lobsters after the Civil War ended. The place lost its importance in 1885 when the rail link to Brooksville was completed.

Bayport today

Bayport has been a popular fishing destination ever since. Families from nearby Brooksville own weekend homes here. You can catch perch and trout here, and mackerel at certain times of the year. In spring 2008, the Hernando County and Southwest Florida Water Management Districts renewed Bayport's harbor and park.
