The Alsheide is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The Alsheide is located in the northwestern part of the old town island ( Marien-Magdalenen Quartier ). It connects the Engelswisch and An der Untertrave , running approximately in an east-west direction.

history

The name of the Alsheide is probably derived from the fact that the road near the Trave was laid in the 13th century on a ridge that, in contrast to the surrounding, lower-lying, humid riverbank meadows, was dry ground, i.e. heather . The prefix Al- is reinforcing in Low German and also underlines the peculiarity of the dry location.

In 1329 the street was first mentioned in a document as Platea quae dictur de Alheide (street, called an der Heide). In 1361 the name Alesheide is found , and in the following centuries various variants appear in documents, some of which are misleading. So it is 1616 as Aalsheide listed, 1785 Aldesheide . In the 18th century , the form alone Heidestrasse was common. The current name has been officially established since 1852.
