The location of Engelswisch, marked in red

The Engelswisch is a street in Lübeck's old town .

location

The approx. 220 meter long Engelswisch is located in the northwestern part of the old town island, the Marien-Magdalenen Quartier . It runs in a wide curve and connects the Große Altefähre with the Engelsgrube , into which it joins opposite the Schwönekenquerstraße . From the Engelswisch, the Petersilienstraße and the Alsheide branch off one after the other in the direction of the Trave .

history

The street was first mentioned in documents in 1294 as Goldoghenstrate , named after the Goldoge councilor family who owned land in this area in the 13th century . This naming persists with variations over a long period of time (1321 Platea Goldoghen , 1366 Goldowenstrate , 1407 Goldoweschenstrate , 1414 Platea Goldowen , 1419 Platea Goldenow , 1465 Goldouwerstrate , 1513 Goldenouwerstrate , 1574 Goldingerstrate and Goldemanstrate ).

Already in the 14th century a name was used in parallel: In 1364 the name Platea dicta Wisch (street, called Wisch) was found, the Low German word Wisch for meadow referring to the lowland that stretched west of the street to the bank of the Trave. In 1398 this name was then English Wisch , like the name of the Angel's Pit, derived from the nearby berths of the merchant ships going to England on the Trave. This name, too , was modified again and again over the following centuries (1404 Pratum anglicum , 1428 Goldoghenstrate, otherwise called de engelsche Wisch , 1458 Engelsche Wisch ).

At the end of the 16th century, the name derived from the Goldoge family was completely out of use. In 1759 the name was Engelswiese , and in 1852 the current name was officially established.
