Frailea castanea is a species of plant in the genus Frailea from the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Frailea castanea grows individually with depressed spherical, dark reddish to chocolate brown, sometimes blue to gray-green bodies. The bodies reach heights of up to 4 centimeters with diameters of 3 to 4 centimeters and have conical, bulbous roots. The 8 to 14 ribs are low and convex. The areoles on it are small. The 3 to 11 dark brown spines are directed downwards, lie on the surface of the body and are 0.5 to 1.5 millimeters long.

The light yellow flowers are up to 4 centimeters long and reach the same diameter. The fruits are yellowish green.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Frailea castanea is common in southern Brazil , Uruguay and Argentina . The first description was published in 1936 by Curt Backeberg .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Frailea castanea subsp. castanea
  • Frailea castanea subsp. harmoniana (F. Ritter) PJ Braun & Esteves

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
