Frailea is a genus of plants fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The botanical name honors the Spaniard Manuel Fraile , whooversawthe cactus collection for the United States Department of Agriculture . The type species of the genus is Frailea cataphracta .
description
The species of the genus Frailea usually grow with many shoots , but sometimes also individually. The low, pressed spherical to short cylindrical shoots have only weakly pronounced ribs and humps as well as small thorns .
The short, funnel-shaped, small flowers arise at the tip of the shoot. They only open briefly during the day or are even cloying . The areoles of the pericarpel and the flower tube are densely covered with wool and bristles.
The thin-walled, dry fruits are densely packed with seeds . They have permanent flower remnants, break open unevenly or do not burst. The up to 1.5 millimeters long seeds are broadly ovoid or often cap-shaped.
