Frailea schilinzkyana is a species of plant in the genus Frailea from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet schilinzkyana honors the Russian natural scientist and privy councilor Guido von Schilinzky (1823–1898).

description

Frailea schilinzkyana usually grows sprouting with broadly spherical light green bodies and forms flat groups. The bodies reach a diameter of 4 centimeters. The 10 to 18 ribs are divided into clear, hexagonal to rounded cusps. The thorns are difficult to distinguish between central and radial spines. The mostly single central spine is black, protruding and up to 4 millimeters long. The 10 to 14 blackish and thin radial spines lie on the surface of the body and are often arranged in a comb shape. They are 2 to 3 millimeters long.

The sulfur-yellow flowers are funnel-shaped. They are up to 3.5 centimeters long and reach a diameter of 2 to 4.5 centimeters. The yellowish to brownish fruits have a diameter of up to 6 millimeters.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Frailea schilinzkyana is common in Paraguay and northeast Argentina in the provinces of Misiones , Corrientes and Entre Ríos . Pierre Braun and Eddie Esteves found the species in Brazil in 2007 (see taxo picture). The first description as Echinocactus schilinzkyanus was published in 1897. Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose placed them in the genus Frailea in 1922 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
