Website of the Province of Misiones |
Misiones is one of the 23 provinces of Argentina . It is located in the northeast of the country on the border with Paraguay and Brazil . The province of Corrientes is located southwest of Misiones .
The province was named after the missions of the Jesuits , the so-called Jesuit reductions , that were in the region. Of the 15 reductions in Argentina, eleven were in Misiones. Four of them were from the 1984 UNESCO on the List of World Heritage set: San Ignacio Miní , Nuestra Señora de Santa Ana, Nuestra Señora de Loreto, Santa María la Mayor.
The biggest tourist attraction of Misiones are the Iguazú waterfalls in the far north of the province on the border with the Brazilian state of Paraná. They have been on the World Heritage List since 1984 .
One of the last remnants of the inner-Atlantic rainforest is located in Misiones .
Geography and climate
Misiones is bordered by the Paraná and Uruguay rivers. Only in the northeast is there a short section where the border to Brazil is not defined by a body of water.
The terrain is hilly to mountainous. The mountains of Misiones ( Sierra de Misiones ) should be mentioned in the south and center of the province , while the Sierra de la Victoria stretches from east to west in the north . The highest point is the Cerro del Rincón with 843 m, which is near the town of Bernardo de Irigoyen .
With the exception of the agricultural area, the area is almost entirely covered by wet and rainforest. In order to protect the very species-rich flora and fauna, the Iguazú National Park was established in the far north. There are the Iguazú waterfalls, which are among the richest in water in the world and are a popular tourist destination.
The climate is subtropical and humid all year round with relatively low seasonal fluctuations. The temperature averages 26 ° C in summer and between 15 and 17 ° C in winter. The amount of precipitation is between 1500 and 1800 mm per year.
Economically important cities
- Posadas , capital of the province with about 275,000 inhabitants, administrative and industrial location.
- Oberá , agro-industrial town in the central hill country, about 60,000 inhabitants.
- Eldorado in the northwest of the province, a former German colony characterized by agriculture, about 50,000 inhabitants.
- Puerto Iguazú , border town to Brazil near the Iguazú National Park, characterized by trade and tourism, about 35,000 inhabitants.
Administrative division
The province of Misiones is divided into 17 departments , to which 75 municipalities ( Municipios ) are assigned. In the system of adjacent municipal territories, these cover the entire area of the province.
The provincial constitution was passed on April 21, 1958 and recognizes the autonomy of the municipalities. The municipalities were divided into those of the 1st category (more than 10,000 inhabitants) and the 2nd category (5,000 to 10,000 inhabitants).
