San Ignacio Miní is a former Jesuit reduction founded by Roque González de Santa Cruz . It is located in the town of San Ignacio 63 kilometers northeast of Posadas in Argentina . The first Jesuits came to this area in 1610 and initially founded this reduction in a different location until the mission was finally built in 1696 at the site of today's ruins. The reductions served to evangelize the local Guaraní .

In the heyday of San Ignacio Miní around 1730, around 4,000 people (missionaries and Guaraní) lived here.

When the Jesuits were expelled from South America by the Spanish in 1767 , the Indians left the reduction and the city remained deserted. In 1984 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, along with three other missions in Argentina .
