San Javier is the capital of the San Javier department in the Misiones province in northeastern Argentina . It is located on the banks of the Uruguay River opposite the Brazilian city ​​of Porto Xavier . It is 132 kilometers from the provincial capital Posadas . In the classification of the municipalities of the province, the place belongs to the municipalities of the 2nd category.

history

San Javier was founded by the Jesuits in 1629 .

economy

Agriculture is the main livelihood. The place is the largest sugar cane producer in the province and has a sugar cane factory built in 1961. Other crops are tea , cassava , tobacco and mate .

During the Easter week , San Javier is the destination of pilgrims from Misiones, Corrientes , Paraguay and Brazil who visit the chapel and Golgotha des Cerro Monje .
