The Departamento Capital is located in the west of the province of Misiones in northeast Argentina and is one of 17 administrative units in the province.

It borders in the north, separated by the Río Paraná , on Paraguay , in the east on the Departamentos Leandro N. Alem and Candelaria , in the south on the Departamento Apóstoles and in the west on the province of Corrientes .

The capital of the Department Capital is Posadas .

The department lies on a gently undulating plain with widely spaced, gently rising hills. In the south the land rises slightly due to the proximity to the Sierra de San José . The Cerro Galarza reaches a height of 230 m.
