location

Oberá is located about 20 kilometers west of Uruguay in the middle of a hilly country overgrown by subtropical rainforest . There are many streams in the area, but no rivers with plenty of water. The climate is subtropical and humid, with hot summers and moderately warm winters.

history

National Festival of Immigrants

Oberá is a young city. From 1913 onwards, immigrants from various European countries, including Germany , France , Italy , Switzerland and Portugal , who had come from Brazil , began to settle in the area . They gave the place the name Oberá. From the official founding of the city in 1928, further immigrants came, mainly from Eastern Europe . Later, isolated Asian and African families also settled in Oberá, so that today the inhabitants can rightly claim that they are descendants of over 70 nations. The city therefore celebrates the Fiesta Nacional del Inmigrante (German national festival of immigrants) every year . The festival is the largest of its kind in Argentina and was celebrated for the 40th time in 2010.

San Antonio Church

Buildings

The different groups of immigrants gave Oberá its own, multicultural and stylistically diverse cityscape. The Inmaculada Concepción church was modeled on the Ukrainian-Persian style. Another church, San Antonio , on the other hand, belongs to German Expressionism.

Museums and green spaces

The Natural Science Museum Florentino Ameghino (named after Florentino Ameghino ) offers information about the flora and fauna of the subtropical rainforest area. The most famous green areas are the Parque de las Naciones and the bird garden Jardín de los Pájaros Wendlinger.

economy

Oberá is the center of a large area with yerba mate cultivation. It is also the industrial center and the most important trading center in the entire east of the Misiones province .
