Website of the Province of Río Negro |
Río Negro is a province in central Argentina on the northern edge of Patagonia . Río Negro has only been a province since July 27, 1955 , before it was a so-called territory.
geography
Río Negro is surrounded by the province of Neuquén in the west, the provinces of Mendoza and La Pampa in the north, the province of Buenos Aires in the northeast and the province of Chubut in the south. In addition, Río Negro borders Chile in the west and the Atlantic Ocean in the southeast .
On the huge provincial terrain you can find a variety of different landscapes. In the east and south, the Patagonian plain, a windy dry steppe, covers wide areas. In the north you will find the temperate valley landscapes of the Río Negro and the Río Colorado . The cold and humid extreme southwest of the province belongs to the southern Andes and is the wettest area in Argentina.
population
The province is sparsely populated overall, but in the upper valley of the Rio Negro, 40% of the provincial population is concentrated around the cities of General Roca (90,000 inhabitants) and Cipolletti (87,000 inhabitants). The largest single town is the tourist center of San Carlos de Bariloche (113,000 inhabitants) in the southern Andes, followed by the provincial capital Viedma on the Atlantic coast (53,000 inhabitants). The fastest growing city is the port city of San Antonio Oeste with its Las Grutas lido (22,000 inhabitants).
A large part of the provincial population (over 55%) are mestizos , but the Tehuelche Indians, who inhabited almost the entire provincial territory before the desert campaign of General Roca (1860–1880), have virtually disappeared as an independent people . Some Mapuche , however, still live in the southern Andes.
Administrative division
The administrative structure of the province of Río Negro was established in the provincial constitution of 1958 and modified in 1988. After that, the province is divided into 13 departments . The municipalities are grouped into two classes. The municipalities with more than 2000 inhabitants are called Municipios , those with less than 2000 inhabitants Comisiones de Fomento . In individual cases, municipalities with a population below 2000 were declared Municipios by the constitutional revision of 1988.
