It borders the province of La Pampa to the north, the Pichi Mahuida department to the east, the Conesa department to the southeast, the San Antonio , Valcheta and Nueve de Julio departments to the south , and the El Cuy and General Roca departments to the west .

The capital of the Avellaneda department is Choele Choel . The place, on the shore opposite the Isla Grande de Choele Choel, is an important transport hub. This is where the Ruta Nacional 22 and the Ruta Provincial 250 , which is connected to the island, cross. A bus station for long-distance buses and an airport, which currently only handles private air traffic, underline the importance of the traffic center. A railway line that connects Buenos Aires with San Carlos de Bariloche passes the place Darwin outside the river valley . Except for occasional freight trains, however, traffic on this route is currently idle.
