geography

Most of the provincial territory is flat and belongs to the dry part of the pampa plain, with the aridity increasing towards the salt-steppe-like west. The climate is temperate. The plain is interrupted by the Sierra del Nevado (up to 1200 m) in the northwest of the province, as well as by the Sierra Lihuel Calel (up to 600 m) in the south of the central part. In the latter is the Lihué Calel National Park , the only tourist center in the province.

population

La Pampa is very sparsely populated, only in the east does the population density reach average values, the west is almost uninhabited and is home to the two least populous (internationally recognized) departments of Argentina, Limay Mahuida and Lihuel Calel. In addition to the provincial capital, which forms the Gran Santa Rosa agglomeration with Toay , the only cities of importance are General Pico (55,000 inhabitants), General Acha (12,500 inhabitants), Eduardo Castex (9,000 inhabitants) and Realicó (7,500 inhabitants), all located in Eastern part of the province. In the western part, the only place with more than 5,000 inhabitants is 25 de Mayo , located on the Río Colorado .

Administrative division

The province of La Pampa is divided into 22 departments . The parishes are divided into two classes. Municipalities with more than 500 inhabitants are called Municipios , those up to 500 inhabitants Comisiones de Fomento . The territories of the departments and the communes are not congruent. The municipal boundaries usually cross one or more departmental boundaries.
